FSSAI Full Form

FSSAI Full Form is the Food Safety and Standards Authority in India. As a statutory institution formed by the Ministry of Health and Family welfare, Government of India, this organisation was formed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The Food Safety and Standards Act is related to food safety and regulations within India and the role of FSSAI is to promote public health through supervising and regulating food safety. A non-executive chairperson is appointed by the Central Government as the leader of FSSAI. 

FSSAI History 

FSSAI was launched on 5 August 2008 by the Minister named Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss. Launched under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and consists of a chairperson and 22 members. The goal is to set food standards to unify the managing rules and leave no ambiguity for consumers, manufacturers and traders and investors. The statutory powers of FSSAI include:

  • Rules and regulations are framed to ensure food safety. 
  • Guidelines for accreditation of laboratories are prepared to test food. 
  • Technical support and scientific judgement is provided to the central government. 
  • Develop international technical standards within the food. 
  • Collect data related to contamination, food consumption and emerging risks. 
  • Spread awareness about food nutrition and safety within India.

Fundamental Documentations required to Secure FSSAI Basic Registration

The FSSAI basic registration requires the following documents:

  • Photo character of the FBO
  • Character affirmation such as Elector Id, Proportion Card, Dish Card, DL, Aadhaar Card, Visa, Senior Resident Card, etc
  • Summary of proposed food articles
  • Structure B (appropriately filled and upheld by the up-and-comer)
  • Association Deed/Testament of Fuse (COI)/Reminder of Association(MOA)/Articles of Affiliation (AOA)
  • Confirmation of the business spot like a lease or inhabitant contract
  • Sterilization of the chief’s system (FSMS) plan
  • Supporting dossiers (if any0 like NOC of Panchayat/District, prosperity NOC
  • Summary of raw parts suppliers
  • Structure IX
  • Water test report worked with the NABL affirmed lab.
  • Import-exchange code (otherwise called IEC) undoubtedly by DGFT
  • Summary of machines and equipment present at the workplace
  • Overview of bosses and Accomplices list

Procedure for applying for FSSAI Basic Registration

Every Food Business Operator (FBO) involved in manufacturing, processing, storing, distributing, or selling food products must obtain either FSSAI Registration or an FSSAI License. The two differ based on the business's size and nature, making it essential for FBOs to secure the appropriate certification. Food packages display a 14-digit registration or license number, which provides details about the manufacturing state and the producer’s permit. The primary goal of this registration process is to ensure greater accountability and maintain food quality standards. The entire licensing and registration procedure is governed by the Food Safety & Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations, 2011.

Penalties for not complying with FSSAI's Guidelines

Any individual involved in the sale of unregulated food products, either directly or through a third party, may face a penalty of up to ₹5 lakh. Similarly, selling substandard food, whether personally or through an external entity, can result in legal consequences. If a person is found trading, advertising, storing, or making food available to the public with accidental contamination, they will be held accountable. Additionally, producing or processing food for public consumption under hazardous or unhygienic conditions, either directly or through a third party, can lead to a penalty of ₹1 lakh. In severe cases where consuming the substandard food leads to life-threatening situations, the penalty for the offender can increase to ₹5 lakh.
