Indian Information Service IIS Officer

The Indian Information Service is a Group ‘A’ service, assigned to candidates who qualify the UPSC Civil Services Examination. IIS Officers manage the media on behalf of the government. Their role includes bridging the gap between the public and the government. IIS Officers work under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. In this article, we will discuss the roles and responsibilities, pay scale, salary and career growth of IIS Officers. 

IIS Officers Roles and Responsibilities 

Following are the roles and responsibilities of IIS Officers: 

  • Overseeing and coordinating the activities of the Press Information Bureau (PIB).
  • Managing government publicity efforts and campaigns.
  • Supervising and guiding news service units like DD News and All India Radio (AIR).
  • Organizing press advertisements and visual publicity campaigns to disseminate information about government policies and initiatives through various media channels.
  • Addressing legal matters related to the verification of titles, registration, and circulation of newspapers in the country.
  • Planning and implementing effective media strategies for the government.
  • Opportunities to serve abroad, particularly in collaboration with Prasar Bharati.
  • Deputation postings in other departments/ministries and roles as Personal Secretaries in the Central Government on a co-terminus basis. 

Indian Information Service Officer Training

The IIS Officers training is conducted in three phases: 

  • Phase 1 training is conducted at LBSNAA for three months. 
  • The Phase 2 is conducted at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication for 9 months. 
  • In phase 3 the probationary officers undergo training for one year at multiple media wings of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. This includes: 
  1. DD News
  2. All India Radio
  3. Press Information Bureau
  4. Registrar of Newspapers for India
  5. Directorate of Field Publicity
  6. Publications Division
  7. Electronic Media Monitoring Centre
  8. New Media Wing of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting
  9. Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity

Indian Information Service Officers Career Growth

Upon completing their probationary period, Indian Information Service (IIS) officers are assigned to the media wing of the Government of India.

  • Their initial posting is as Assistant Director in the Junior Grade.
  • The first promotion elevates them to the role of Deputy Director.
  • In the Junior Administrative Cadre, they serve as Joint Director or Deputy Secretary to the Government of India.
  • They may also advance to the position of Director within the Junior Administrative Cadre.
