Through asanas, pranayama, meditation and mindfulness, yoga supports mobility, independence, disease prevention and overall well being across different age groups.

International Yoga Day 2026 History

  • Yoga originated in ancient India and has been practised for centuries as a comprehensive system integrating physical health, mental discipline, spiritual growth and balanced living.
  • In 2014, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 21 June as the International Day of Yoga following the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, giving yoga worldwide institutional recognition.
  • The first International Day of Yoga was observed on 21 June 2015 with participation from countries across continents, transforming yoga into a global public health and wellness movement.
  • Over the years, yoga has expanded into schools, workplaces, healthcare institutions and community centres, becoming an important component of wellness programmes in nearly 190 countries.
  • The 2026 observance marks the 12th International Day of Yoga and reflects the growing role of yoga in addressing demographic challenges such as ageing populations worldwide.
