The Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Great Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, is one of the world's largest seasonal saline wetlands. It features deserts, mudflats, saline wetlands, and hilly islands. The sanctuary is famous for "Flamingo City," where thousands of greater flamingos breed. Its seasonal wetlands attract various migratory bird species, making it an important space for migration routes.

Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of around 7506.22 sq. km, is Gujarat’s largest sanctuary, featuring a seasonal saline desert. Declared as a sanctuary in February 1986, it is home to the world-famous Flamingo, where thousands of flamingos nest and breed. The site also houses Dholavira, a 5,000-year-old Harappan city, attracting archaeologists worldwide. The mudflats of the Rann, located 10 km from Nir outpost on Kala Dungar, serve as India’s only regular flamingo breeding site. The sanctuary is holding shelter to a diverse range of water birds and mammals, with wetlands transforming into a saline desert post October-November.
Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary History
Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a wildlife sanctuary on May 15, 1986, to conserve its unique saline wetlands, mudflats, and diverse wildlife. It plays an important role in flamingo breeding, with the famous Flamingo City in the Great Rann attracting thousands of greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) during the breeding season. The sanctuary also has historical importance, as it houses Dholavira, a Harappan civilization site, making it a destination for wildlife enthusiasts and archaeologists.

The Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary holds diverse plant species adapted to its desert and saline wetland ecosystem which includes Saline-Tolerant Plants, species adapted to high salinity, with mechanisms like salt excretion through leaves. Prosopis chilensis, a deep-rooted Chilean mesquite tree thriving in arid regions. Gugal (Commiphora wightii) and Thor (Euphorbia nivulia), resin-producing and succulent plants adapted to dry conditions.
Other than these, the Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary is providing shelter to Gorad (Dichrostachys cinerea) which is a thorny shrub aiding soil stabilization in semi-arid regions. Kerdo (Capparis decidua), a drought-resistant plant known for edible fruits. These plants contribute to the unique biodiversity and ecological balance of Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary.
Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary Fauna
The Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a diverse range of fauna that have adapted to its extreme desert and saline wetland conditions. Among the mammals, the sanctuary shelters species like the Indian Wild Ass, Indian Gazelle (Chinkara), Striped Hyaena, Desert Fox, Indian Fox, Indian Wolf, and Caracal. Large herbivores such as Nilgai and Wild Boar are also found here, along with smaller mammals like the Indian Porcupine, Indian Pangolin, Rufous-tailed Hare, Ruddy Mongoose, Desert Hedgehog, and Pale Hedgehog.
The sanctuary is a significant birding site, hosting thousands of migratory and resident birds, including Greater and Lesser Flamingos, Rosy and Great White Pelicans, Black-necked Storks, Eurasian Spoonbills, Demoiselle Cranes, Houbara Bustards, Indian Coursers, and Sandgrouse. The existence of these species showcases the ecological importance of the sanctuary, making it a crucial habitat for desert-adapted wildlife.
