Ministry of External Affairs, History, Functions and Responsibilities

The Ministry of External Affairs is a central government agency managing and conducting India’s foreign relations and its diplomatic affairs. The Minister of External Affairs heads the Minister, who is also a cabinet member, and reports directly to the Prime Minister of India. The ministry plays an important role in formulating and implementing India’s foreign policy, sharing the country’s interest abroad and fostering friendly relations with other nations. 

Ministry of External Affairs History 

The Ministry of External Affairs history can be traced back to the British Colonial era. In 1783, the foreign department was set up to manage the diplomatic relations of the East India Company. Later after 1947, when India got independence, the Foreign Department was reshaped as the Ministry of External Affairs and Commonwealth Relations. The organisation was renamed as the Ministry of External Affairs in 1948.

The Minister of External Affairs is responsible for managing the Ministry of External Affairs. He is assisted by the Minister of State for External Affairs and Foreign Secretary. The foreign secretary manages the administration of Foreign Ministry and heads the Indian Foreign Service. The Foreign Ministry is subdivided into functional areas, such as: 

• Territorial Divisions: East Asia, West Asia and North Africa, Central Europe, Latin America, etc.
• Functional Divisions: Economic Diplomacy, Consular, Passport & Visa, Protocol, etc.
• Specialized Divisions: Disarmament and International Security Affairs, United Nations Political, etc.

Ministry of External Affairs Diplomatic Initiatives and Soft Power 

The Ministry of External Affairs works towards promoting India’s soft power and cultural diplomacy. The initiatives by MEA include: 

Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR): conduct exhibitions, performances and cultural exchanges to promote Indian culture and arts abroad. 

Overseas Indian Affairs: Engage with the Indian Diaspora community and address their interests and concerns. 

Buddhist Diplomacy: India uses Buddhist heritage to deepen cultural and civilizational bonds across south, southeast and East Asia to foster mutual respect and personal connections. 

Yoga Diplomacy: By promoting Yoga, India has emerged as a successful symbol of global harmony and celebrates International Day of Yoga on 21 June every year.
