Operation Karuna was launched by India to provide humanitarian assistance to people in Myanmar who got affected by Cyclone Mocha. The Indian Navy ships carried emergency food items, tents, essential medicines, water pumps, portable generators, clothes, sanitary and hygiene items etc. Cyclone Mocha caused severe devastation in Myanmar and Bangladesh, causing widespread loss of life and property.

Operation Karuna Overview
India launched Operation Karuna to extend urgent help to Myanmar after the devastating Cyclone Mocha. As part of this humanitarian mission, three Indian Navy ships carrying vital supplies—like food, tents, medicines, water pumps, generators, clothing, and hygiene kits—have arrived in Yangon. This quick response highlights India’s commitment to supporting its neighbours in times of crisis.The cyclone also caused major destruction in neighbouring Bangladesh, especially in Cox’s Bazar, where nearly a million Rohingya refugees live. Many shelters were destroyed, worsening an already fragile situation and adding urgency to India’s relief efforts.
Operation Karuna Elements
The Operation Karuna included the following three important elements:
- Ships: INS Shivalik, Komarta, and Savitri were used in sending emergency relief material.
- Relief Materials: Included food supplies, tents, essential medicines, water pumps, portable generators, clothes and hygiene items.
- Geopolitics: Showcases India’s commitment to ensure security and growth for all in the region.

Cyclone Mocha
- Cyclone Mocha was a tropical cyclone that originated in the Bay of Bengal.
- The IMD declared this cyclone to be a very cyclonic storm. The name of the storm ‘Mocha’ was suggested by Yemen.
- The cyclone was given the name Mocha with reference to Red Sea Port City known for its coffee production.
