Operating as a Union Armed Force under the Ministry of Railways, it follows the administrative structure of Indian Railways. The RPF includes 12 RPSF battalions, with three more being formed, including a Mahila Battalion, to enhance security further.

As the only Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) with state police-like powers, its superior officers are recruited through the UPSC CSE Exam each year, while subordinate officers are recruited through RPF-conducted exams.
