Question

UPSC Prelims 2019 Question:

Which one of the following is not a Harappan site

  1. 1. Chanhudaro
  2. 2. Kot Diji
  3. 3. Sohgaura
  4. 4. Desalpur

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 3: Sohgaura

Detailed Solution

Explanation:

  • Sohgaura is located in Uttar Pradesh and is not a Harappan site. The Sohgaura copper plate inscription was found at Sohgaura, in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. It is believed to be from the Mauryan period. The inscription is in Brahmi script and is an example of administrative inscription. It records a royal order that the grains stored in the granary should be carefully distributed.

  • The other three are Harappan sites:
    • Chanhudaro is an Indus Valley Civilization archaeological site. It lies south of Mohenjo Daro in the Pakistani province of Sindh. It is almost exclusively devoted to craft production, including bead-making, shell-cutting, metal-working, seal-making and weight-making.
    • Kot Diji is an Early Harappan site. It is located on the left bank of river Indus opposite Mohenjo Daro. Two important features of this site are:
      • existence of a massive and solid defensive wall of mud resting on stone and supported wilh mud bricks revetment at some place from outside
      • Diverse forms of wheel-made potteries decorated with plain dark brown stripes
    • Desalpur is an Harappan site located in the Kutch district of Gujarat. Pottery ware with lines of bluish-green color, Terracotta seals, etc. were discovered from this site.

Therefore, option (3) is the answer.
