Anna Rajam Malhotra was born in Kerala in 1927 who became the First Woman IAS Officer in India. Beside the societal norms, she preferred to be the part of administrative services and serve important roles. She contributed to the development of Mumbai Nhava Sheva Port. She received Padma Bhushan in 1989 for her service during her tenure.

Anna Rajam Malhotra is the First Woman IAS Officer of India born in Kerala, Ernakulam District. She did her schooling in Kozhikode and further studies from Madras University. Anna Rajam Malhotra qualified her UPSC CSE Exam in 1951 and joined Madras Cadre serving under Chief Minister C. Rajagopalachari. During her career, she worked with two Prime Ministers and seven Chief Ministers.

Anna Rajam Malhotra made significant contributions to India’s administrative progress, including her involvement in the successful organization of the Asian Games 1982 and the development of Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva port, a major infrastructure milestone. In recognition of her dedicated service, she was honoured with the Padma Bhushan 1989. Anna Rajam Malhotra, First Woman IAS Officer of India, left behind a legacy of leadership and commitment to public service. She passed away in 2018 at the age of 91.

  1. In 1951, Anna Rajam Malhotra became the First Woman IAS Officer of India, setting a historic example in a predominantly male profession.
  2. She played a crucial role in the planning and development of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s largest container port. She was also instrumental in initiating the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, significantly improving regional transport and economic integration.
  3. Throughout her tenure, she served under seven Chief Ministers in Tamil Nadu and held various key positions in the state and central governments. She contributed to the successful execution of the Asian Games 1982 in collaboration with Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
  4. In acknowledgment of her outstanding service, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1989, one of India’s highest civilian honors.
  5. Anna Rajam actively encouraged and mentored women to join the civil services, becoming an inspiration and a role model for generations to come.
  6. Even after retiring, she continued contributing to the corporate world as a director at Hotel Leela Venture Ltd., reflecting her enduring commitment to leadership and service.
