The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 is one of India's most competitive government examinations. Before applying, candidates must meet the prescribed UPSC eligibility criteria 2026, including age limit, educational qualification, nationality, number of attempts and for certain services, physical and medical standards.

For UPSC Age Limit 2026, General and EWS candidates must be between 21 and 32 years of age as on August 1, 2026. However, candidates belonging to reserved categories are eligible for age relaxation. OBC candidates can generally apply up to 35 years, SC/ST candidates up to 37 years and eligible PwBD candidates up to 42 years, subject to the conditions prescribed by UPSC.

UPSC Age Relaxation 2026

The UPSC Age Relaxation 2026 allows eligible candidates from reserved and specified special categories to apply beyond the standard upper age limit of 32 years. For CSE 2026, eligible OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates generally receive 3 years of relaxation, SC/ST candidates receive 5 years and eligible PwBD candidates can receive up to 10 years, subject to the conditions prescribed in the official notification.

UPSC Educational Qualification 2026

The UPSC Educational Qualification 2026 requires candidates to have a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification. Candidates from any recognised stream can apply, while final-year students may also be eligible subject to fulfilling the prescribed conditions.

  • Bachelor’s Degree: Candidates must hold a graduate degree from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification.
  • Recognised University: The degree must be awarded by a recognised university or institution.
  • Any Stream: Candidates from Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Medicine, Law, Pharmacy and other recognised disciplines can apply.
  • No Minimum Percentage: UPSC does not generally prescribe any minimum percentage of marks in graduation.
  • Final-Year Students: Candidates appearing in their final year of graduation can apply, subject to the prescribed conditions.
  • Professional Degrees: Candidates with recognised professional or technical qualifications equivalent to a graduation degree may also be eligible.
  • Proof of Qualification: Candidates who qualify for the later stages must provide proof of passing the qualifying examination as required by UPSC.
  • Optional Subject: The candidate's graduation subject does not have to be the same as the UPSC Mains optional subject.

UPSC CSE 2026 Nationality Requirements

UPSC Physical Eligibility Criteria 2026

The UPSC Physical Eligibility Criteria 2026 require candidates to meet prescribed medical and physical standards for certain services, particularly the Indian Police Service (IPS) and other services where specific fitness requirements apply; there is no common physical test for all Civil Services candidates.
