About TeLEOS-2:
- What is it? It is a Singaporean Earth Observation satellite built by ST Electronics (Satellite Systems).
- It is designed to capture satellite imagery in all-weather and round-the-clock conditions.
- The 750 kg satellite will be launched into a Low Earth Orbit.
- It carries a made-in-Singapore Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) capable of providing 1 m resolution data.
- It will be equipped with a 500 GB onboard recorder for recording the data captured and a high-speed 800 Mbps downlink.
- Applications: It will provide high-resolution imagery for various applications such as disaster management, resource monitoring, and environmental monitoring.
What is the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)?
- It is an indigenously-developed expendable launch system of the ISRO.
- It comes in the category of medium-lift launchers with a reach up to various orbits, including the Geo Synchronous Transfer Orbit, Lower Earth Orbit, and Polar Sun Synchronous Orbit.
- It has a four-stage system comprising a combination of solid and liquid-fuelled rocket stages.
- It is the first Indian launch vehicle to be equipped with liquid stages.
- It is capable of placing multiple payloads into orbit. Thus multi-payload adaptors are used in the payload fairing.
- Some notable payloads launched by PSLV include India’s first lunar probe Chandrayaan-1, India’s first interplanetary mission – Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) and India’s first space observatory – Astrosat.
- PSLV-XL is the upgraded version of PSLV which uses larger strap-on motors (PSOM-XL or S12) to achieve higher payload capability of up to 1,800 kg (4,000 lb) to Sun-synchronous orbit.
Q1) What is an Earth Observation satellite?
Earth observation satellites or Earth remote sensing satellites are satellites used or designed for Earth observation (EO) from orbit, including spy satellites and similar ones intended for non-military uses such as environmental monitoring, meteorology, cartography, and others.
