IAS Full Form is Indian Administrative Service. Considered to be the most challenging exam in India, IAS constitutes the most prestigious position in this examination. UPSC is responsible for conducting the IAS Exam every year and recruiting candidates to various positions based on the result offered by the Government of India. 

IAS Full Form 

The IAS Exam was conducted for the first time in the year 1858 as Imperial Civil Service. In 1950, Indian Administrative Services were established along with other administrative positions. The Union Public Service Commission conducts the exam for this position and the candidates who qualify this exam are appointed by the Union/State government and assigned different positions at district level. IAS Officers are part of the executive branch of government and counted under permanent bureaucracy. Many aspirants belonging to different states and categories attempt this examination. 

IAS Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria to become an IAS Officer is as follows:

  1. Candidate’s Nationality- The candidate has to be an Indian national in order to try and attempt the Indian Civil Service Exam.
  2. Age Limit – The minimum age limit to appear for UPSC CSE is 21 years while the maximum age limit is 32.
  3. Educational Qualification – The candidate must be a graduate from a university registered under or recognised by the Government. However, candidates who are awaiting their graduation results may also apply for the examination.
  4. Number of Attempts – There is a distinct number of attempts that are assigned to the following categories. 
  • General – 6 attempts
  • OBC – 9 attempts
  • SC/ST – No fixed limit
  • Any number of attempts can be made by the SC/ST candidates until the candidate reaches the maximum age limit for the examination, i.e, 37 years
  • Economically Weaker Section – 6 attempts

IAS Officer Duties and Commitment

UPSC Notification 2025 was released on 22nd January 2025.

→ The UPSC Vacancy 2025 were released 1129, out of which 979 were for UPSC CSE and remaining 150 are for UPSC IFoS.

→ As per UPSC Notification, the last date to apply is 18th February 2025.

→ The UPSC Prelims 2025 is scheduled to be conducted on 25th May 2025 and UPSC Mains 2025 will be conducted on 22nd August 2025.

→ Apply once through it and aspirants can apply for various government exams conducted by UPSC.
