The Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) is one of the prestigious Group ‘A’ civil services  for candidates who have qualified the UPSC CSE 2025. IRTS Officers from this cadre hold the responsibility to manage the transportation department of the Indian railways and for revenue generation for the Indian Railways. There are two major wings in the traffic service namely, Operations and Commercial. The cadre strength is around 900. IRTS stands for Indian Railway Traffic Service which was established to manage the railway operations, IRTS Officers ensure the efficient movement of trains, utilization of resources, and the enhancement of passenger and freight services across the network of the Indian Railways.

The Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) was established in 1967 as a Group ‘A’ civil service in the Government of India which manages the transportation operations of the Indian Railways. The IRTS Officers play an important role in managing the smooth functioning of one of the world’s largest railway networks. The Indian Railway Traffic Service plans, operates, and manages the commercial aspects and the movement of trains across the country.

The Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) Officers hold the major responsibility of overseeing the transportation of the Indian Railways. Below mentioned are some of the key roles and responsibilities of IRTS Officers:

  1. IRTS Officers optimise the resource allocation and ensure efficient train operations.
  2. They manage the customer interface of railways, by enhancing the passenger experience which includes amenities, services, and customer engagement.
  3. IRTS Officers ensure the planning and executing train movements, resolving operational challenges, and minimizing disruptions.
  4. Officers also contribute to revenue generation and customer satisfaction by managing sales, pricing, services, and marketing for both passenger and freight operations. 
  5. IRTS Officers also have the opportunity to work on deputation in other ministries and through the Central Staffing Scheme.

UPSC Notification 2025 was released on 22nd January 2025.

→ The UPSC Vacancy 2025 were released 1129, out of which 979 were for UPSC CSE and remaining 150 are for UPSC IFoS.

→ As per UPSC Notification, the last date to apply is 18th February 2025.

→ The UPSC Prelims 2025 is scheduled to be conducted on 25th May 2025 and UPSC Mains 2025 will be conducted on 22nd August 2025.
