The Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) was established in 1967 as a Group ‘A’ civil service in the Government of India which manages the transportation operations of the Indian Railways. The IRTS Officers play an important role in managing the smooth functioning of one of the world’s largest railway networks. The Indian Railway Traffic Service plans, operates, and manages the commercial aspects and the movement of trains across the country.

The Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) Officers hold the major responsibility of overseeing the transportation of the Indian Railways. Below mentioned are some of the key roles and responsibilities of IRTS Officers:
- IRTS Officers optimise the resource allocation and ensure efficient train operations.
- They manage the customer interface of railways, by enhancing the passenger experience which includes amenities, services, and customer engagement.
- IRTS Officers ensure the planning and executing train movements, resolving operational challenges, and minimizing disruptions.
- Officers also contribute to revenue generation and customer satisfaction by managing sales, pricing, services, and marketing for both passenger and freight operations.
- IRTS Officers also have the opportunity to work on deputation in other ministries and through the Central Staffing Scheme.
