The NSO, or the National Statistical Office, is India's principal statistical organisation responsible for collecting, compiling, analysing, and disseminating official statistical data. It functions under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) and provides crucial data for economic planning, governance, policy formulation, and evidence-based decision-making. 

The NSO covers diverse areas such as national income, employment, industrial production, household consumption, and socio-economic indicators. Established in 2019, it was formed by merging the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) and the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The merger aimed to improve coordination, efficiency, standardisation, data quality, and statistical capacity, thereby strengthening India's official statistical system and enabling more reliable and timely information for policymakers and stakeholders. 

NSO Structure

The National Statistical Office (NSO) functions through specialised divisions with specific responsibilities to guarantee the methodical gathering, processing, and distribution of official statistics. These divisions work together to produce high-quality, consistent, and trustworthy statistical data for socioeconomic planning and informed policymaking.

• Chief Statistician of India (CSI): The CSI is in charge of all statistical operations, guarantees departmental cooperation and leads the NSO.
• The Economic Statistics Division (ESD): It is responsible for economic indicators, the index of industrial production, GDP estimation, and national income accounts.
• Social Statistics Division (SSD): It focuses on health, education, employment, gender statistics, and human development indicators 
• Field Operations Division (FOD): Surveys around the country are carried out by the Field Operations Division (FOD), which gathers primary data from homes, businesses, and organisations.
• Data Processing Division (DPD): It oversees data entry, validation, processing, and tabulation.
• Survey Design and Research Division (SDRD): To enhance data quality and dependability, creates survey frameworks, sampling strategies, and methodology.
• In order to standardise data, the NSO makes sure that central ministries, state governments, and international statistical organisations work together.

NSO Functions

The NSO, or Statistics Wing, is the primary organisation responsible for organising the nation's integrated statistical system development. 

The following are the Wing's primary functions:

• National accounts are prepared, and annual estimates of national income through the National Accounts Statistics (NAS) report, gross/net domestic product, government and private final consumption expenditures, capital formation, savings, capital stock, quarterly estimates of GDP, state-level estimates of domestic product and fixed capital formation of supra-regional sectors and comparable estimates of State Domestic Product (SDP) at current prices are prepared.
• Coordination of statistical activity with the goal of finding data availability gaps or redundant statistical work with regard to State Statistical Bureaus (SSBs) and Government of India departments, as well as recommending appropriate corrective actions.
• Establishing and upholding statistical norms and standards, as well as developing definitions, concepts, and procedures for data collection, processing, and distribution.
• Monthly Consumer Price Index Numbers for Urban Non-Manual Workers are compiled and made available.
• Give the Indian government's departments advice on statistical methodology and data analysis.
• Coordinating and carrying out follow-up sample surveys and the periodic All India Economic Censuses. 
• Providing the database required for development, research, policy formulation, and economic planning, nationwide sample surveys on a variety of socio-economic aspects, including employment, consumer spending, housing conditions, debt and investment, etc.
• Carrying out technical examination, sample checks, quality checks, and audits of statistical surveys and data sets; if necessary, producing correction factors and alternative estimates.
• Distribution of statistical data to government, semi-government, or private data users/agencies through a variety of regular or ad hoc publications. 
• Distribution of data upon request to United Nations agencies such as the International Labour Organisation, the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, the United Nations Statistics Division, and other pertinent international agencies.
• Administration of the Grants-in-Aid programme, which gives grants to reputable research institutions and registered non-governmental organisations for conducting special studies or surveys, printing statistical reports, and funding conferences, seminars, or workshops pertaining to various official statistics topics.
• Conducting pilot surveys and methodological research to develop improved sampling strategies and estimating processes, especially small area estimates.
