Uma Harathi N, who secured All India Rank 3 in the UPSC Exam 2022, is an alumna of IIT Hyderabad, where she pursued civil engineering. Her early education up to Class 10 was at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Hyderabad, laying a strong academic foundation.

After graduation, Uma turned her focus towards civil services, choosing Anthropology as an Optional Subject. Her solid academic background, especially the analytical training from IIT, played a key role in developing the critical thinking and problem-solving skills required for the UPSC. She also gained experience working briefly at a coaching institute, which further refined her understanding of the exam’s demands and preparation strategies.

Uma Harathi N secured All India Rank 3 in UPSC 2022, a result that came after years of persistence. Her journey was not easy and was marked by repeated setbacks.

  • She finally cracked the exam on her fifth attempt, proving the value of consistency. In her third attempt, she managed to reach the interview stage but her Mains score pulled her down.
  • The fourth attempt was another disappointment when she failed to clear even the Prelims. That failure forced her to deeply analyze her preparation and strategy.
  • She realized that Geography, her initial optional subject, was not aligned with her strengths. After careful thought, she switched to Anthropology, which turned out to be the right choice.
  • Group study sessions with peers played an important role in keeping her motivated. Her friends helped her overcome phases of self-doubt and mental fatigue. Throughout this time, her family stood as her strongest support system.
  • Each setback became a lesson, pushing her to reflect and improve. Uma often says that failure gave her the opportunity for self-reflection and resilience. 
  • With the right mindset and the right strategy, she finally achieved her dream of becoming an IAS officer.
