UPSC Marathi Literature Optional Syllabus assesses student’s ability to understand marathi language and literature with a focus on modern and classical writings, literary criticism and the development in the language. The UPSC Marathi language will check the literary components along with analytical skills along with social and cultural context. UPSC Marathi Literature Optional Syllabus 

UPSC Marathi Literature Syllabus can be divided into two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2 carrying 250 marks each. The Paper 1 of UPSC Marathi Literature Syllabus covers historical and linguistic aspects including development, leading dialects, dominant forms of literature from ancient to medieval times and all the works from the Bhakti movement and medieval and early modern literature. Paper 2 of UPSC Marathi Literature covers modern literary criticism and analysis. The paper includes study of contemporary marathi writers and their contributions in modern literature including modern poetry, drama and prose and their critical evaluation.

From beginning to 1818 AD, with special reference to the following: The Mahanubhava writers, the Varkari poets, the Pandit poets, the Shahirs, Bakhar Literature.

From 1850 to 1990, with special reference to developments in the following major forms: Poetry, Fiction (Novel and Short Story), Drama; and major literary currents and movements, Romantic, Realist, Modernist, Dalit, Gramin, Feminist.
