  • His early education included the study of Urdu at a local madrasa. Despite financial difficulties, he continued his education while working and later completed his Bachelor’s degree.
  • He began his professional career as a school teacher and later worked in the education department. His experience of ordinary life and society strongly influenced the themes of his later writings.
  • Premchand initially wrote under the pen name “Nawab Rai.” His collection Soz-e-Watan, which carried nationalist themes, was banned by the British authorities. He subsequently adopted the name Premchand.
  • He was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and the Non-Cooperation Movement. In 1921, he resigned from his government teaching position and became more actively involved in literature and public causes.
  • Premchand wrote in both Urdu and Hindi. His writing style was known for its simplicity, realism, emotional depth and strong observation of society.
  • In addition to writing, he worked as an editor and journalist and was associated with publications such as Madhuri, Hans and Jagran. He also worked briefly as a scriptwriter in the Bombay film industry.
