didwana lake

Didwana Lake is a major saline Playa Lake in Rajasthan. It is located near Didwana town in the eastern Thar Desert at 336 m elevation. It forms a key arid land geomorphic feature. The lake supports salt extraction and preserves geological and prehistoric records spanning from the Middle Pleistocene to recent phases.

Didwana Lake Features

Didwana Lake is a hypersaline playa with economic and geological importance, showing unique desert ecology, mineral composition and long human and environment interaction history.

  • Location: Situated in Didwana-Kuchaman district, eastern Thar Desert, near highways and salt fields.
  • Size: Extends about 5.6 km length and 2.4 km width, making it the second largest Playa Lake in eastern Thar with significant spatial salt deposition area.
  • Composition: Contains 20 m thick sediments of clay, silt, calcite, gypsum and halite, formed under hypersaline conditions through intense evaporation processes.
  • Characteristics: Endorheic basin with over 30% salinity; seasonal water fills during monsoon and dries into salt flats under extreme desert temperatures.
  • Biodiversity: Supports halophilic microorganisms, zooplankton and xerophytes; fauna limited due to no forests, but adapted desert life survives near saline margins.
  • Economic Significance: Major salt production center contributing to regional output; historically linked to trade, with modern extraction supporting local economy and employment.
  • Geological Significance: Shows uranium presence up to 190 ppm in groundwater and 2072 ppb in brine, indicating mineral rich semi arid depositional environment.
