This year Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti 2026 will mark the 122nd Birth Anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri. It commemorates a leader associated with simplicity, accountability and national self reliance. Shastri served as Prime Minister from 9 June 1964 until 11 January 1966. His short tenure included the 1965 India-Pakistan War, agricultural reforms, food security measures and support for the White Revolution. He received the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1966.

Lal Bahadur Shastri’s journey from a modest childhood to national leadership was shaped by freedom struggle, public service, discipline and social responsibility.
- Birth and Early Life: Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on 2 October 1904 in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Sharada Prasad Srivastava, died when Shastri was young, leaving his mother Ramdulari Devi to raise the family.
- Education and Shastri Title: He studied at Kashi Vidyapith and completed his education in 1926. He received the honorary title ‘Shastri’, meaning scholar and later used it instead of his family surname, Srivastava.
- Freedom Movement: Shastri joined the Non Cooperation Movement in 1921 as a teenager. He later participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1930 and the Quit India Movement in 1942.
- Congress and Public Service: He joined the Indian National Congress in 1928 and worked with the Servants of People Society founded by Lala Lajpat Rai. He was elected to the United Province Legislative Assembly in 1937.
- Role After Independence: After 1947, Shastri served in Uttar Pradesh and later held Union portfolios. He served as Railway and Transport Minister from 1952–1956, Industry Minister from 1957–1961 and Home Minister from 1961–1963.
- Prime Minister of India: Shastri became India’s second Prime Minister on 9 June 1964 after Jawaharlal Nehru’s death. He remained in office until 11 January 1966.

Lal Bahadur Shastri’s contributions covered national security, agriculture, administration, foreign relations and institutional development during a challenging period for India.
- Jai Jawan Jai Kisan: During the 1965 India-Pakistan War and food crisis, Shastri gave the slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’. It highlighted the importance of soldiers and farmers to national strength.
- Food Self Sufficiency: India faced severe food shortages during his tenure. Between 1960 and 1963, India imported 15 million tonnes of US grains. Shastri gave greater importance to agriculture and food production.
- Green Revolution: Shastri brought agriculture into greater policy focus in the Planning Commission. His government promoted improved irrigation and high yielding crop varieties and supported institutions linked with agricultural production and farmer support.
- Agricultural Institutions: The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices was formed during his tenure to support Minimum Support Price arrangements. The Food Corporation of India was established in 1965 under the Food Corporations Act 1964.
- White Revolution: Shastri supported greater milk production and national self reliance in dairy production. He established the National Dairy Development Board in 1965 and supported the Amul milk cooperative of Anand, Gujarat.
- Railway Accountability: After the Mahbubnagar rail accident, Shastri resigned as Railway Minister by accepting moral responsibility. His resignation became an important example of accountability in public life.
- 1965 India-Pakistan War: Pakistan launched Operation Grand Slam on 1 September 1965 after Operation Gibraltar failed. Shastri’s government authorised an all out military response on 3 September 1965.
- Tashkent Declaration: Shastri and Pakistani President Ayub Khan signed the Tashkent Declaration on 10 January 1966. The agreement addressed withdrawal of armed personnel, restoration of diplomatic relations and improvement of bilateral ties.
- Death: Shastri died in Tashkent on 11 January 1966, aged 61, shortly after signing the Tashkent Declaration.
- Awards: He was awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1966.
