Alluri Sitarama Raju was born on July 4, 1897, in the village of Mogallu, near Bhimavaram in present-day Andhra Pradesh. Alluri Raju began his early education in his hometown and later moved to Visakhapatnam to further study. By 18, he chose to renounce material pleasures and embraced the life of a sannyasi.

The Rampa Rebellion (1922-1924) was the most significant movement led by Alluri Sitarama Raju. It was primarily a revolt of the tribal communities against the enforcement of the Madras Forest Act of 1882, which severely restricted the rights of the tribal people to exploit forest resources and practice shifting cultivation freely.
