Alluri Raju began his early education in his hometown and later moved to Visakhapatnam to further study. By 18, he chose to renounce material pleasures and embraced the life of a sannyasi.

His primary focus was resisting the British-imposed Forest Acts, which curtailed the tribes’ access to their lands and forests.

The Rampa Rebellion (1922-1924) was the most significant movement led by Alluri Sitarama Raju. It was primarily a revolt of the tribal communities against the enforcement of the Madras Forest Act of 1882, which severely restricted the rights of the tribal people to exploit forest resources and practice shifting cultivation freely.

  • Raju organized and led a series of guerrilla attacks on British police stations and government offices across the Eastern Ghats.
  • Frustrated by the ongoing rebellion, the British authorities placed a bounty of Rs. 10,000 for Raju’s capture, dead or alive, highlighting the scale of the challenge posed by the uprising.

Alluri Sitarama Raju Death and Legacy

As the British continued to impose hardships on the tribal communities, Alluri Sitarama Raju chose to surrender, hoping for a fair trial in return. Tragically, on May 7, 1924, he was deceitfully captured, tied to a tree, and executed. Raju’s legacy as an anti-imperialist revolutionary remains powerful. He is remembered as a fearless leader who, despite not being a tribal himself, passionately fought for the rights and freedoms of the tribal populations. His bravery and unwavering spirit earned him the title of Manyam Veerudu (Hero of the Jungle).
