Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) is an important Group “A” civil service which is also the youngest Civil Service in India. It was established in 1976 and the first batch of IRPS Officers recruited through the UPSC CSE was in 1980. The major responsibility of the IRPS Officers is to manage the personnel and human resources of one of the largest railway networks. IRPS stands for the Indian Railway Personnel Service, which is the Group "A" Civil Service of the Indian Government. The IRPS Officers are responsible for handling the human resources of around 1.4 million employees in the Indian Railways and managing the welfare of Indian railway employees.

The Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) is an esteemed Group “A” civil service governed by the Ministry of Railways. The primary reason for the establishment of Indian Railway Personnel Service was to manage the human resources of the Indian Railways which plays an important role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the railway network of India. IRPS Department is responsible for recruitment process, training, career development, and overall welfare of railway employees.

IRPS Roles and Responsibilities

IRPS Officers manage a diverse range of responsibilities which are important for effective management of human resources within the Ministry of Railways. These include:

  1. IRPS Officers hold the key responsibility for the recruitment of human resources for various levels, ensuring that the right candidate is into the Indian Railways.
  2. They look forward to the training programs for employees, focusing on skill enhancement such as leadership skills.
  3. IRPS Officers also ensures the welfare of employees which also includes managing employee benefits, healthcare, housing, and other welfare schemes.
  4. IRPS Officers also took a record of the employees performance ensuring that merit-based promotions are conducted on a timely basis.

IRPS Eligibility Criteria 2025

Candidates applying for the IRPS Exam 2025 must meet the below specific IRPS Eligibility Criteria 2025, including educational qualifications, age limits, and relaxations for certain categories:

Educational Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree from a recognized university is mandatory.
  • Candidates awaiting results after taking the qualifying examination can also apply.

Age Criteria

  • Minimum age: 21 years
  • Maximum age: 32 years as of August 1 of the exam year.

Age Relaxation

  • SC/ST applicants have age relaxation up to 5 years.
  • OBC applicants have age relaxation up to 3 years.
  • Domiciles of Jammu and Kashmir (January 1, 1980–December 31, 1989) have relaxation up to 5 years.
  • Armed forces personnel disabled during hostilities have relaxation up to 5 years.
  • Ex-servicemen (including ECOs/SSCOs) have relaxation up to 5 years.
  • Blind, deaf-mute, and orthopedically challenged individuals have relaxation up to 10 years.
