List of Major Festivals of Telangana

The major festivals of Telangana, along with their important cultural, religious, tribal and historical associations, are given below:

Bathukamma

Bathukamma is a famous floral festival of Telangana.

  • It is celebrated mainly by women for nine days during September-October.
  • Women arrange seasonal flowers such as Tangedu and Gunuka in a distinctive, conical arrangement called Bathukamma.
  • Women gather around the Bathukamma, sing traditional songs and celebrate together.
  • The festival ends with Saddula Bathukamma, when the floral Bathukamma is immersed in a water body.
  • Boddemma is a separate but related festival of Telangana. It is celebrated before Bathukamma and marks the beginning of the festive season that culminates in the Bathukamma celebrations.

Bonalu

Bonalu is a major festival dedicated to Goddess Mahakali, particularly associated with Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

  • It is celebrated during Ashada Masam, generally in July-August.
  • The term Bonam refers to the food offering made to the Mother Goddess.
  • Women carry pots containing offerings of rice, milk and jaggery, decorated with neem leaves, turmeric and vermilion.
  • Important traditions associated with the festival include Rangam, Ghatam processions and Pothuraju.
  • The festival is also associated with the worship of different forms of the Mother Goddess, including Yellamma, Pochamma, Mysamma and other local deities. 

Sammakka-Saralamma Jatara (Medaram Jatara)

Medaram Jatara is a major tribal festival held at Medaram in Mulugu district.

  • It is dedicated to the tribal deities Sammakka and Saralamma.
  • During the Jatara, devotees offer Bangaram, traditionally represented by jaggery, to the deities.
  • It is recognised as one of the largest tribal congregations in Asia and attracts devotees from different parts of the country

Nagoba Jatara

Nagoba Jatara is an important festival of the Gond tribal community.

  • It is held at Keslapur in Adilabad district.
  • The festival is dedicated to Nagoba, the serpent deity.
  • It is celebrated during the Pushya month, generally in December-January.
  • Gonds and other tribal communities, including those from neighbouring Maharashtra, participate in the Jatara.

Kakatiya Festival

The Kakatiya Festival celebrates the historical and cultural heritage of the Kakatiya period.

  • It is associated with the Warangal-Hanamkonda region.
  • The festival highlights the region’s Kakatiya heritage and cultural traditions.

Shakambari Festival

The Shakambari Festival is associated with the worship of Goddess Shakambari, a form of the Mother Goddess.
