Punjab celebrates several famous festivals throughout the year and each of them carries distinct historical, cultural or religious significance. The list of main Festivals of Punjab 2026 has been provided below:
- Lohri: Punjab’s most celebrated winter harvest festival marks the end of the winter solstice. Families gather around bonfires, offer sesame seeds and jaggery, perform Bhangra and Giddha and enjoy traditional dishes like makki di roti and sarson ka saag.
- Baisakhi: Celebrated every year on 13 April, Baisakhi marks the harvest of the rabi crop and the Sikh New Year. It also commemorates the founding of the Khalsa Panth by Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur Sahib in 1699, following the initiation of the Panj Pyare.
- Basant Panchami: This festival welcomes the spring season and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. People wear yellow clothes, fly colourful kites, perform prayers and consider the day highly auspicious for marriages, new houses and new beginnings.
- Teeyan: Celebrated during the arrival of the monsoon, Teeyan is a traditional women’s festival. Women dress in colourful attire, sing folk songs, perform Giddha, decorate swings and celebrate the beauty of the rainy season.
- Hola Mohalla: Organised every March at Anandpur Sahib by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Hola Mohalla was started by Guru Gobind Singh on 22 February 1701. It features Gatka, horse riding, archery, mock battles, processions, kirtan and community langars led by Nihang Sikhs.
- Kila Raipur Sports Festival: Popularly called the Rural Olympics, this event began in 1933 through the vision of Inder Singh Grewal. Held near Ludhiana during the first weekend of February, it attracts more than 4,000 participants and more than one million spectators with traditional races, kabaddi, tug of war, gymnastics, fencing and rural sports.
- Patiala Craft Mela: Organised at the Sheesh Mahal Art Gallery in Patiala, this 15 day fair brings together nearly 150 craftsmen from across India. It showcases Phulkari embroidery, traditional Punjabi furniture, handicrafts, folk performances and cultural exhibitions.
- Diwali: Among Sikhs, Diwali commemorates the return of Guru Hargobind from imprisonment at Gwalior Fort. The grandest celebrations take place at Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), Amritsar, where the shrine is illuminated with thousands of lights and fireworks.
- Gurpurab: Gurpurabs commemorate the birth anniversaries and important events associated with the Sikh Gurus. The celebrations include Akhand Path, Nagar Kirtans, devotional hymns, community service and langars in gurdwaras across Punjab.
- Other Major Festivals: Punjab also celebrates Eid, Christmas and Holi with enthusiasm, reflecting the state’s tradition of religious harmony and cultural diversity alongside its major Sikh and harvest festivals.
