The major festivals of West Bengal represent the state’s religious traditions, folk culture, artistic heritage and social harmony. These festivals include Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Gangasagar Mela, Poush Mela, Rash Mela and various folk festivals, which showcase Bengal’s unique blend of spirituality, creativity and community participation.

  1. Durga Puja
  • Durga Puja is the most important festival of West Bengal, celebrating Goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura and the triumph of good over evil.
  • It is known for artistic idols, elaborate pandals, cultural programmes and community participation.
  • Kolkata Durga Puja was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021.
  1. Kali Puja
  • Kali Puja is dedicated to Goddess Kali and is celebrated on the Amavasya night of Deepavali.
  • The festival reflects the strong Shakta tradition of Bengal.
  • It is especially popular in Kolkata and southern districts of West Bengal.
  1. Gangasagar Mela
  • Gangasagar Mela is an annual pilgrimage fair held at Sagar Island during Makar Sankranti.
  • Devotees take a holy dip at the confluence of the Hooghly River (a distributary of the Ganga) and the Bay of Bengal and visit the Kapil Muni Temple.
  • Kapil Muni is associated with the Samkhya school of philosophy, one of the six orthodox schools of Indian philosophy.

  • Poush Mela is a famous cultural fair held at Shantiniketan in Birbhum district during the Bengali month of Poush.

  • It commemorates Maharshi Debendranath Tagore’s acceptance of the Brahmo creed in 1843.
  • The festival is closely associated with Baul music, which is included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

  • Rash Mela is a Vaishnava festival dedicated to Lord Krishna, celebrated mainly in Cooch Behar.
  • The festival has historical links with the Koch dynasty.
  • The Cooch Behar tradition is associated with the worship of Sri Sri Madan Mohan, a form of Krishna.

  • Poila Boishakh marks the Bengali New Year and is celebrated on the first day of the Bengali calendar.
  • It is associated with cultural programmes, fairs, traditional food and celebrations of Bengali identity.
  1. Basanta Utsav
  • Basanta Utsav is a spring festival celebrated at Shantiniketan through colours, music and dance.
  • It was introduced by Rabindranath Tagore at Visva-Bharati and reflects his vision of cultural education.

  • Nabanna is a harvest festival celebrating the arrival of new rice.
