- Aryabhata, in his 5th-century work Aryabhatiya, gave a highly accurate approximation of π. His value was close to the value accepted today.
- Madhava of Sangamagrama, who lived in medieval Kerala, took the study of π further by developing an infinite series that could be used to calculate its value with increasing accuracy. Other mathematicians of the Kerala School of Mathematics further developed this mathematical tradition.
- The symbol π was introduced by William Jones in 1706. The Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler later popularised its use, helping make π the standard symbol for this constant.
