Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) is one of India’s most important railway infrastructure initiatives aimed at creating exclusive railway tracks for freight transportation. The project was conceived in 2005 to separate freight and passenger traffic, increase railway capacity, reduce logistics costs and improve operational efficiency. Implemented by the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) under the Ministry of Railways, the project is transforming freight movement through high capacity, high speed, electrified corridors across the country.

Dedicated Freight Corridor is an exclusive freight railway network designed to move goods faster, safer and more efficiently across India.

  • Concept and Objective: DFC was conceived in 2005 and approved by the Union Cabinet in 2008. The project aims to separate freight trains from passenger trains, increasing capacity, reducing delays and improving logistics efficiency across the railway network.
  • Implementing Agency: The project is being implemented by Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), a special purpose vehicle under the Ministry of Railways responsible for planning, construction, operation, maintenance and business development of freight corridors.
