  • Location: Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve is located in Madhya Pradesh within the Satpura Range of the Deccan Peninsula. It covers about 4,981.72 sq km and includes Bori Sanctuary, Satpura National Park and Pachmarhi Sanctuary, together forming the Satpura Tiger Reserve.

What is Hyderabad Liberation Day?

Hyderabad Liberation Day is observed on 17 September every year to commemorate the integration of the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad into the Indian Union in 1948. The day marks the end of the Nizam’s rule following Operation Polo, which began on 13 September 1948.

On 17 September 1948, the Hyderabad State Forces surrendered to the Indian Army, bringing the military operation to an end and paving the way for Hyderabad’s integration into the Indian Union. It marked an important step in the political integration of India after Independence.

Hyderabad Before Liberation

At the time of Independence, Hyderabad was the largest princely state in British India, ruled by Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam.

When British paramountcy ended in 1947, the Nizam did not accede to India and instead sought to maintain Hyderabad’s separate status. To avoid an immediate break in relations, India and Hyderabad signed a Standstill Agreement on 29 November 1947, which was intended to maintain existing administrative arrangements while negotiations continued.

The agreement, however, did not resolve the question of Hyderabad’s political status. Over the following months, relations between Hyderabad and the Indian government deteriorated, while political tensions and violence increased within the state.

The situation became more complicated with the activities of the Razakars, an armed organisation associated with the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and led by Qasim Razvi. The Razakars opposed Hyderabad’s integration with India.

At the same time, the Telangana peasant struggle, which had begun in 1946, challenged the feudal order under the Nizam. With political conflict and internal unrest intensifying, a negotiated settlement became increasingly difficult, eventually leading to Operation Polo in September 1948.

Operation Polo

As negotiations failed to resolve the Hyderabad question, the Government of India launched Operation Polo on 13 September 1948. It was a military operation to bring Hyderabad into the Indian Union, with Major General J.N. Chaudhuri leading the Indian forces.

The operation lasted for five days. On 17 September 1948, Major General Syed Ahmed El Edroos, who commanded the Hyderabad State Forces, surrendered to the Indian Army. The Nizam subsequently announced a ceasefire, bringing the operation to an end.

The surrender ended the Nizam’s rule as an independent princely authority and paved the way for the integration of Hyderabad into the Indian Union.

Hyderabad After Integration

Following its integration into the Indian Union in 1948, Hyderabad continued as a separate state. A major change came with the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, which reorganised states largely on linguistic lines.

The Telugu-speaking Telangana region of Hyderabad State was merged with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. The Marathi-speaking and Kannada-speaking areas of the former Hyderabad State were merged with Bombay State and Mysore State respectively.

However, concerns over development, employment, education, public spending and the implementation of safeguards promised to Telangana contributed to a separate-state movement. The demand gained political momentum over several decades and eventually led to the creation of Telangana as a separate state on 2 June 2014.

  • The new frog is small and stout-bodied
  • Adult males measure 22–25.5 mm in snout-to-vent length, while females measure 24.4–26 mm. 
  • It has a distinct circular tympanum, a prominent supratympanic fold, small rounded discs at the tips of its fingers and toes, and a notably wrinkled dorsal surface. 
  • The frog is predominantly dark brown to reddish-brown, with darker lateral surfaces forming a diffuse band extending towards the groin. 
  • Its iris is dark brown to blackish with a faint coppery tint. 
  • The species is closely associated with water and forest habitats.

Why the Subhash Chandra Case Matters

  • On August 25, a single bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved a repayment plan involving personal guarantor and Essel Group founder Subhash Chandra.
  • Creditors with admitted claims of ₹22,006.57 crore were offered only around ₹6.25 crore.
  • Banks alleged that certain non-bank entities involved in the process were associates or related parties of the guarantor.
  • They alleged that these entities acted under Chandra’s influence to support a repayment plan involving an exceptionally large haircut. A special NCLT bench subsequently stayed the single-bench order.
